Recently, we were able to help in the treatment of Audie, a four-year-old German Shepherd and a member of K-9 unit for the Prince William County Police. Trained in tracking, criminal apprehension, article and evidence searches, handler protection and building searches, Audie is a vital part of the Police Department.
Audie was referred to BVNS-Springfield in November by Dr. Scher of Prince William Animal Hospital for lumbosacral pain and mild urinary incontinence. You can read more about this case, here. During his examination it was determined that an MRI would be vital to an accurate diagnosis and to effective treatment and an MRI was performed. The MRI (an example of which is included above) showed an extruded disc at L7-S1 and also revealed compression of the left L7-S1 nerve root as demonstrated in this image.
A dorsal laminectomy was performed by the team at BVNS and Audie recovered very well and went home the next day. At his two week recheck, Audie was doing great and he will likely be able to go back to work in about 3 months!
We are so happy to help each and every animal that comes to BAVI, but we are even more excited that were a part of getting a service dog like Audie back on the road to recovery. He will soon be back to work serving and protecting all of us.

BAVI is happy to announce that this October, we will be opening our third location.
